About our Qualifications and ExperienceAngela Washington
MSc, Reg.MRCSLT, Advanced member BABICM, Member CMSUKQualifications:I qualified as a Speech Therapist in 1970 and have worked with adults with neurological disorders for well over twenty years, both in England and in Australia. In 1988-9 I completed a Progressive Management Development course at the Nuffield Institute for Health Services Studies and my article The Argument for Notional Loads in Speech Therapy was published in Health Manpower Management, June 1990. In 1995 I graduated as an MSc in Research in Remedial and Caring Practice at Loughborough University and published my dissertation The Role of the Head Injury Case Manager in Personal Injury, August 1996. I continued to research into aspects of head injury as part of my current studies towards a PhD at Nottingham Trent University. Experience:A move to Australia in 1978 enabled me to work for much of the time with young adults with acquired brain injury - most of whom had sustained severe traumatic brain injuries. I was also actively involved in the clinical training of final (fourth) year BSc Speech Pathology students. Following my return to the UK in 1984 I continued to work with brain injured adults in a variety of situations and was actively involved with the clinical training of student speech & language therapists at Newcastle University. I have experience of both clinical and managerial positions and have worked in statutory, voluntary and, now, independent sectors. In 1992 I was appointed the first Brain Injury Case Manager for Southern Derbyshire as part of the Department of Health Traumatic Brain Injury Project, now part of Southern Derbyshire's mainstream services. Over 300 people with severe brain injury and their families were referred to the service during my four years in post. I was involved with the setting up and inauguration of Headway Derby in 1994 and continue to be a member of the group. From 1997 to 2000 I sat on the Management Committee (as Secretary and as Chair) as a professional member of Headway Derby. I have retained my professional membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. I am an advanced member of the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers (BABICM) and was involved in setting up the association. I am also a member of the Case Management Society UK (CMSUK). I hold membership of Headway National, Child Brain Injury Trust and the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum. In April 1997 I set up as an independent brain injury case manager based in Derby and accept instructions for case management directly with clients and also accept instructions for expert work. I am included on the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) Expert Database and have undergone training on Lord Woolf's Reforms for Experts and in Courtroom Skills.
